PCIT works with parent and child together to improve overall behavior and to enhance the parent child relationship. The principles of PCIT are based on Diana Baumrind’s research on parenting styles. Parent- Child Interaction Therapy draws on both attachment and social learning theories to bring about authoritative parenting. Authoritative parenting emphasizes a child’s need for a balance of nurturance and limit setting.

PCIT is a behavioral family intervention that focuses on increasing positive interactions between parents and their children. PCIT helps parents learn effective behavior management skills. Parent and child are together in sessions where parents receive coaching from the therapist, learning specific skills to increase their child’s positive behaviors. Families participating in PCIT generally meet with the therapist once a week for approximately 12 weeks.
